A Free Eye Screening Camp was organized at St. Sebastian Church, Bendur, on 19th
October 2025, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The camp was jointly conducted by the Health
Commission and the Family Commission of the parish in association with Father Muller
Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru.
The program began with a short prayer and blessing led by Rev. Fr. Vivek Pinto, Assistant
Parish Priest of Bendur, invoking God’s grace on the medical team and participants. Dr. Susan
Rasquinha, Convener of the Health Commission, welcomed the gathering and introduced the
purpose of the camp — to promote better eye health among parishioners of all age groups.
The camp was led by Dr. Saritha R. J. Lobo, Professor and Head of the Department of
Ophthalmology, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore, who served as the chief
doctor for the event.
In her message, Dr. Saritha emphasized the importance of eye health in daily life, stating that
“health is wealth, and the eyes are among the most precious gifts of God.” She highlighted that
regular eye check-ups are essential for adults, while children, due to increasing screen
time from mobiles and computers, should be tested periodically to prevent long-term vision
problems. She also encouraged everyone to adopt healthy lifestyle habits and to never ignore
early signs of vision discomfort.
A team of doctors and optometrists from Father Muller Hospital assisted in conducting the
eye examinations. Parishioners across all age groups — children, youth, and senior citizens
— actively participated in the camp. Those requiring vision correction were issued eye test
cards, prescribed medicines, and advised on suitable treatments. Reading glasses were
distributed free of cost, while spectacle frames and lenses were made available at
concessional rates.
Dr. Gladson Jose proposed the vote of thanks, appreciating the support of the clergy,
commissions, and medical team for their efforts in organizing a beneficial and well-coordinated
health initiative. The program was compered by Dr. Shalet D’Souza, who ensured the smooth
conduct of the proceedings.
The event received a positive response from the parish community, as many participants
expressed gratitude for the opportunity to get their eyes tested by experienced professionals
within the parish premises. The camp concluded successfully, spreading awareness about the
importance of eye care and preventive health
